Metro Rail is a rapid transportation system widely used in major cities around the world. ‘Dhaka Metro Rail’ is a government public transport project under construction in the Dhaka Metropolitan area funded by JICA. It is being built by the state-owned Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL). According to a study by the BRAC Institute of Governance and Development, the average speed of vehicles in Dhaka city was 21.2 km/h in 2004, but it dropped to 6.8 km/h in 2015. As a result, it currently takes 3 to 4 hours to travel from Uttara to Motijheel by bus. But it will take only 40 minutes to cover this distance by metro rail. That is why steps have been taken to build metro rail in the densely populated city of Dhaka. Dhaka Metro Rail Project will save time for city dwellers and play an important role in the economic growth of the country. The Dhaka Metro Rail Line is an elevated railway, being constructed above ground level with steel and concrete. In December 2012, the ‘Dhaka Mass Rapid Transit Development Project’ or ‘Dhaka Metro Rail Project’ was approved by the Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC). A total of 6 routes were fixed for this. At present, the construction of the first route for the metro rail called ‘MRT Line-6’ is nearing completion and its Uttara to Agargaon section has been opened for passenger transport. The length of this route is 21.26 km. A total of 24 train sets will run in it. When the entire project is completed, the Dhaka Metro Rail is expected to carry around 60,000 passengers per hour and more than 5 lakh passengers per day. Metrorail can help reduce population density in Dhaka city. People will then be able to live outside the city at a lower cost and come to Dhaka quickly for work, education, or business. For example, people from Gazipur or Narayanganj area will be able to reach their destination in Dhaka city in less than an hour. Also, there is scope for expansion of each metro rail route in the future. So, it can be said that Dhaka Metrorail is a dream project of Bangladesh that will transform the city of Dhaka from its current status to a modern cosmopolitan one.
