Essay on English-medium Schools

By: Haque | Words: 350 | For class 9-10/SSC

Introduction

Nowadays English-medium schools are much popular among the rich and elite-class people of the country. In fact, it has become a popular trend among rich people to send their sons and daughters to English-medium schools.

Reasons for Sending Children to English-Medium Schools

There are some reasons behind the popularity of English-medium schools. First of all, English is an international language. It is used everywhere in the world. Hence, this language is very important for the career development of a person. As a result, parents want to teach their children English and so send them to English-medium schools. Secondly, learning and speaking English is considered a matter of prestige among many people. Many people consider speaking English fluently as a matter of pride or a sign of high class in society. So, they want to send their children to English-medium schools for being able to speak English fluently. Thirdly, many English-medium schools are designed only for rich and elite-class people. People of the high class send their children to those schools. They think that if they do not send their children to those expensive English-medium schools, their social status will be adversely affected. Lastly, there is a general conception that the quality of education in Bangla-medium schools is not good. Though it cannot be said to be fully true, there are many low-quality Bangla-medium schools. The low quality of some Bangla-medium schools prompts many people to send their children to English-medium schools.

Demerits

There are also some harmful effects of studying in an English-medium school. In many cases, studying in an English-medium school makes a student weak in the Bengali language. In some instances, children become excessively fond of western culture due to studying in English-medium schools. Then children do not feel the due love and compassion towards our own language, culture and tradition.

Conclusion

The quality of English-medium schools is, however, controversial. Many of them are not efficient. Moreover, the medium of primary and basic education should always be the mother tongue. Then the children will be able to take the full benefit of education.
