Introduction: Facebook is a social media network that was founded in February 2004. It helps people to communicate easily with their friends, family, and colleagues. The name ‘Facebook’ originates from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the United States to help students get to know each other better. It is operated and owned by Facebook Inc., whose new name is Meta. In 2021, the number of Facebook users worldwide reached 2.80 billion.
How to Use Facebook: Users must register before using the site. Users can also join the common-interest user groups created by their workplace, school, college, or other organization on Facebook. Facebook is an open social platform, where anyone 13 years of age or older has free access as a registered user. Users can create profiles with their photos, personal interest lists, contact information, and other personal information. It allows users to communicate with friends and other users by exchanging private or public messages. Every user can create and join the ‘groups’ and ‘pages’ of their interest.
Foundation: Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with some of his college roommates and fellow computer science students. The website’s membership was initially limited to Harvard students but was subsequently expanded to some other colleges in the Boston area. Gradually it added support for other university students, then for high school students, and finally for anyone 13 years or older.
Criticism & Controversy: Facebook has also met with some controversies. It has been blocked intermittently in several countries including the People’s republic of china, Vietnam, Iran, Uzbekistan, Pakistan, Syria, and Bangladesh on different bases. For example, it was banned in many countries for allowing content judged as anti-Islamic and containing matters of religious discrimination. It has also been banned at many workplaces to prevent employees from wasting their time on the site. There were also problems with the privacy of Facebook users as well as the safety of user accounts.
Social Impact of Facebook: Facebook affects the social life and activity of people in various ways. It can reunite lost family members and friends. One such father named John Watson found his daughter after 20 years. He was able to meet his daughter after he found her Facebook profile. There are many such instances where friends and family members have found one another after many years. Some studies have also named Facebook as a source of problems in relationships. Using Facebook may, sometimes, create disbelief and jealousy between husband and wife or lovers.
Political Impact of Facebook: Facebook is an extremely popular and powerful new way to interact and voice opinions. It is claimed that Facebook affects youth voting rates, support by youth of political candidates, and general involvement by the youth population in different elections. In February 2008, a Facebook group called “One Million Voices Against FARC” organized an event where thousands of Colombians marched in protest against the Colombian Revolutionary Armed Forces (FARC). Facebook, currently, plays an important role in different political campaigning and activities.
