Introduction: Man is by nature alone. He always feels certain loneliness and vulnerability in him. This is why he seeks the company of others. Friendship flourishes between two persons when they find singleness of mind between them.

Who is a Friend: A friend is one of the rarest blessings in a man’s life. A friend is one who stands by us through thick and thin. He supports us in all weather. He shares both our joys and sorrows. Still, he is not a yes man or a soft-spoken flatterer. He is not afraid of speaking out the honest truth at the right moment, though it may unpalatable and hard to swallow to his friend. He is a sincere well-wisher and not a honey-tongued flattered. He is also not a summer bird who flies away with the severity of winter.

The Necessity of Friendship: Human life is full of uncertainty and vulnerability. Here weal and woe come and go like sunshine and cloud. The presence of a true friend in our life increases our joy and lightens our sorrow. Besides, a friend helps us make a good judgment about important matters. He stands by us in our moments of necessity and tries his best to help us selflessly. Good friends are also necessary for keeping us mentally sound by sharing our feelings, likes dislikes, and views with our friends. A man without true friends around him can become mentally ill and derailed.

Making Friends: It will not be redundant to say that a man cannot live fully without sincere friends. For this reason, we need to make friends. However, making friends is not easy. In fact, it is a science. For having friends a man has to have certain qualities and develop some positive habits. First of all, to attract others he himself will have to be attractive. This attraction may be both outwardly and inwardly. Secondly, to have sincere friends, a person will have to be sincere in his thoughts and actions. Thirdly, a man has to be selfless to his friend. It is said that friendship is disinterested commerce. There should not be any intention on one side or the other to make friendship a matter of gain or convenience. Fourthly, true friendship is possible only between equals. A friendship between unequal status or worth cannot last long. That is why we should choose friends of equal status. Fifthly, one must open one’s heart completely to a friend. He must not hold back anything. At last, friendship needs a lot of tolerance and forbearance.

How to Keep Friends: If making friends is a science, keeping friends is an art. Friendship is like a delicate plant that needs care. For keeping friends we must use our time, attention, patience, and perseverance. Having won a friend, we must nurture the friendship with love and affection.

Conclusion: Though friendship is, undoubtedly, a divine blessing, it has some drawbacks. Sometimes friends become conspiratorial with others. They want to gain their narrow interest at the expense of others. Such attitudes can cause a lot of harm to others. Moreover, friendship needs a lot of time. Very often friends waste a lot of time gossiping and other unproductive activities.
