Street hawkers give color and variety to city life. They are both sellers and buyers. They bring the market to our doorsteps, confectioners, sweetmeats for children, utensils for housewives, piece-good fabrics, and knick-knacks for all. What a variety they offer! Each has his peculiar cry or slogan to attract buyers.
You can include among the hawkers the handy repairman of old scrap materials. You have lost or mislaid your key; and up comes the man who makes for you a substitute key for a few paise. Your kettle or saucepan has sprung a leak; the soldering-man will come and set it right in a few minutes. The carpenter, the umbrella-repairer, the furniture-polisher — all sorts of men go round the streets, calling out to the busy housewife.
Every day in the morning the newspaper vendor goes wheeling on his cycle and the sweetmeat-seller hawks his snacks. In the afternoon, one listens drowsily to the jingle made by the utensil-seller, the vendor as he pedals his refreshment along the sun-baked streets. Then as evening draws nearer, the Chanachurwala jingles his way along with the ice-cream seller or Phuchka or Idliwala.
Gone are the days of perfume-sellers, around whom our grandmothers used to gather in their youth when he would open his box and fill the house with the scent of perfume and hair oil. Flower-selling hawkers are also no more today. Times have changed, old fashions have disappeared, and so have those street hawkers.

Introduction: A street hawker is a familiar face in Bangladesh. He is an active man and earns his livelihood through hard labor. He sells different household items.
Where Seen: We usually see a street hawker selling his goods in the streets. Sometimes, he sits on the footpath or on the sides of a big road with his commodities. He is also seen in the junction of big roads, bus stops, bus and train stations, launch terminals, and other places of public gathering. Some hawkers go from door to door of the residential houses.
Description of a Street Hawker: A street hawker is a poor man but he is not a beggar. He is self-employed. He earns his diving by dint of hard labor. The hawkers in our streets are a symbol of relentless struggle and dignified hard labor. They have very little capital and sell all types of cheap commodities of everyday use such as utensils, cloth, used clothing, used shoes, vegetables, fruits, readymade garments, towels, toys, curd, sweetmeats, ice-cream, tea, handmade cakes, children’s books, handicrafts, earthen goods, stationery goods, and products of cottage industries. They carry their goods in pushcarts, rickshaw vans, or on their shoulders. A street hawker puts on cheap clothing such as a lungi and a shirt or Fatua and bears a Gamcha (local towel) on his shoulder to wipe perspiration. A street hawker usually lives in slums in extreme poverty.
Nature: The street hawkers are usually good by nature. They work pretty hard to earn their livelihood, but some of the hawkers are much clever and deceive simple people especially the women and children by collecting much higher prices for defective or low-quality goods.
Position in the Society: A street hawker does not have a high position in society. He is very poor. With the money he earns, he can barely keep his body and soul together. But his work is not abominable. It is full of the dignity of labor.
Conclusion: A hawker’s life is full of vulnerability. In towns, he has to pay a toll to the extortionists and sometimes to the police. During the rainy season, it becomes very difficult for him to earn money. Then he has to lead a miserable life. So, it is necessary to rehabilitate them and provide social security for them.
